How do Dental Implants Work?

Dental implants are small screws that are surgically placed into the gums to replace the lost roots of missing teeth. Once in place, they can be used to support any number of replacement teeth from a single dental crown to a full denture.

How are Dental Implants Placed?

Dental implant placement is a relatively conservative surgical procedure. We begin by numbing the area to ensure safety and comfort. We may also use dental sedation to ensure your complete comfort and relaxation through this process. Then, we make a small incision in the gum tissue and insert the dental implant posts. Once in place, we attach a protective cap that will maintain gum shape while the implant site heals and the implant fuses to the gum and bone tissue. The entire surgical procedure may take an hour or longer. After your treatment, you will need to rest and relax for a day or two. We will provide detailed after care instructions following your implant placement procedure.

Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Thanks to advances in the materials used to craft dental implants and the innovative dentistry techniques and technologies, just about anyone can be a candidate for dental implants. The idea candidate will meet the following requirements:

  • Relatively good oral and overall health
  • Willingness to commit to the extensive and complex tooth replacement process
  • Adequate jawbone and gum tissue to support implants

What Happens After Dental Implant Placement?

Once your dental implant posts are in place, the restoration process is not quite done. First, you’ll need to wait for several months as your smile undergoes an essential process called osseointegration. This is the process through which an implant fuses with the supportive bone and gum tissues, mimicking the lost tooth roots. Once the osseointegration process is complete, we’ll attach the abutment posts. Then, we design your dental crown, bridge, or denture. After we receive the final restoration, we affix them to the implant posts, recreating your flawless smile.
